Building a robot

The builder, the blocks and the check.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. You will build your robot by joining blocks and filling them in with plain words and numbers. If you can write your rules down on paper, you can build them here.

What is a trading robot?

A trading robot (also called an EA, short for Expert Advisor) is a small program that runs inside MetaTrader. It watches prices and buys or sells by following a set of rules. With TheTradingRobot, the rules are yours.

Where do I start?

Start from one of the example robots and change its numbers, or from a blank page. Each example page explains its rules in plain words.

What can the builder refuse?

The builder will check every robot and refuse the ones on our list: bigger trades after a loss, adding to a losing trade, grids against the price, trading the other way to win back a loss, and a robot without a stop loss. Robots we will not build.

Which indicators can I use?

The standard MetaTrader 5 indicators: moving averages, RSI, MACD, ATR, Bollinger Bands, Stochastic, ADX, CCI, Williams %R, Parabolic SAR, Momentum, Rate of change, Money Flow Index, On-Balance Volume and Ichimoku, plus price, the highest and the lowest of N bars. Custom indicators will come later; we will say when, once it is real.

Testing

The Strategy Tester in MetaTrader 5 is the only backtest you will see here.

Can I try my robot before I pay?

Yes. You will be able to download a free test copy of any robot you build. It runs only in the Strategy Tester in MetaTrader 5, which replays past prices, so you can see how your rules would have traded before you pay. Past results do not tell you what will happen next.

Do you have your own backtest?

No. The MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester is the only backtest you will see here, shown as MetaTrader produced it. How to test your robot.

It did well in the Strategy Tester. Will it do the same live?

No one can promise that. Past and test results do not show what will happen next. Live prices, spreads and delays differ from a test, and a test cannot know what the market will do.

Why does my robot open no trades in the Strategy Tester?

The usual reasons: the test dates start before the robot's indicators have enough bars, the symbol or timeframe is not the one it was built for, or the robot pauses around news and the news file is missing (the calendar does not work in the tester). Troubleshooting has each one with its fix.

Your accounts and the lock

Every robot you get is built for the MetaTrader 5 account numbers you name.

Which accounts does my robot run on?

Only on the MetaTrader 5 account numbers you enter when you buy it, for example a demo account and a live account. On any other account it shows a message and does not trade. The Strategy Tester always runs it.

What is my account number?

The login your broker gave you for MetaTrader 5. It is a number, shown in the Navigator under Accounts and in the title bar of MetaTrader. It is not your password. Where to find it.

Can I change the accounts later?

Ask for an account change on your account page. We build the same robot again for the new account number. The copy you already downloaded keeps working on the old account.

Does a demo account count the same as a live one?

Yes. The lock looks at the account number only, so demo, live and prop firm accounts are treated alike. Prop firm challenge accounts often show as demo accounts, which is why the lock does not care.

What does the lock stop, and what does it not stop?

It stops casual sharing, and running a robot on the wrong account by mistake. On any other account the robot does nothing: no trades, no chart buttons, no messages to your phone. It shows a message on the chart, writes it once in the Experts journal and shows one alert.

It does not stop a determined person from breaking the lock, or a trade copier from copying its trades to other accounts. Each file is unique to its purchase and names its build when it starts, and our terms do not allow sharing the file or copying its trades to other accounts.

Does the robot need the internet, or our website?

It needs your broker's connection, like any robot. It never contacts our website. There is no licence server and no online check. No licence key needed. It keeps working if our website is down.

Paying for your robot

Building and checking are free. You pay once for each robot you run on your own accounts.

What do I pay for?

Building and checking your robot will be free, and so will be its test copy. To run a robot on your own accounts, you will pay once for that robot and enter the account numbers it may run on. We will build it for those accounts and email you when it is ready.

While we launch, getting your robot will be free too. We will announce prices at least 30 days before payments start.

Is there a subscription?

No. There is no subscription. You will pay once for each robot, and downloading it again will be free. Your rules stay yours, and you can download a copy of them at any time.

How long does it take to get my robot?

Our build computer makes robots in order, so there can be a wait. We email you when yours is ready to download. The longest wait is 72 hours.

What exactly do I download?

Your robot, one file for MetaTrader 5 whose name ends in .ex5, and its compile log, which shows Result: 0 errors. Your robot's numbers are built into it, so there is nothing else to load. You can download it again at any time.

What if I change my strategy later?

A changed strategy is a new robot. Moving blocks, or changing a robot's name or notes, is not a change. Once payments start, each new robot is a new purchase.

Can I cancel?

Yes, until your robot is ready to download, for a full refund. If it is not ready in time, we refund you in full without you having to ask. The details are on our refunds page.

Will you need my trading password?

Which brokers and prop firms can I use?

Your robot will be made for MetaTrader 5, so you need a broker that offers it. Some prop firms have their own rules about robots, so read your firm's rules before you use one. We never claim that a firm accepts our robots.

Your rules and your data

What stays yours, and who can see it.

Do I own the robot?

Your rules stay yours, and you can download a copy of them at any time. The robot comes with a licence to use it on the accounts you named. Sharing the file, or copying its trades to other accounts, is not allowed.

Can you see my strategy?

If a member of our staff ever opens your strategy, it is logged with the reason, and you can see that log. We open it only for a support request you started. Your account numbers sit in our database and go into the robot file only in a scrambled form plus the last four digits.

What do you keep about me?

Your account, your robots, the account numbers you entered, your downloads and the emails we sent you. Our privacy notice lists everything, with how long we keep it.

About TheTradingRobot

What we are, and what we are not.

Will it make me money?

We cannot promise that. A robot follows your rules exactly. If your rules lose money, the robot will lose money too. What it can do is run your rules the same way every time and stop at the limits you set. Trading is risky, and you can lose more than you put in.

Do you give trading advice?

No. We cannot tell you which robot to build or which rules to use. We can help with the builder, your robot files and MetaTrader 5 setup. TheTradingRobot is software. TheTradingRobot is not authorised or regulated by any financial regulator, such as CySEC in Cyprus, the FCA in the UK, or the CFTC and NFA in the US.

What is PipCircle?

PipCircle is a separate website that checks real-money trading accounts, using data read from the broker's own trading server, and shows their results in public. When your robot is trading, you can connect that account to PipCircle. A listing on PipCircle is not a recommendation.
