Safety limits and stops

Every robot you build will have safety limits inside it, and you can always stop it yourself. This page explains what each limit does, and what it cannot do.

A limit stops new trades. It cannot stop prices from jumping, so a loss can sometimes go past the limit you set.

The safety limits

You choose the numbers. When a limit is reached, your robot stops opening new trades. You can change the numbers in your safety limits, but you cannot delete them.

Safety limitsLondon morning robot

Example: the account has lost 2% today, which is its daily loss limit, so the robot has stopped opening new trades until tomorrow.

  • Daily loss limit

Stops new trades for the day after a loss this size, as a share of the account.

    2%

  • Stop loss on every trade

Each trade gets a price where it closes by itself if the market goes against you.

    Always on

  • Trading hours

Only opens trades between these times, London time.

    08:00 to 17:00

  • Pause around news

Stays out for this long before and after big news, when prices can jump.

    30 min

  • Daily loss limit

After a loss of this size in one day, as a share of the account, your robot stops opening new trades until the next day.

  • Stop loss on every trade

Each trade gets a price where it closes by itself if the market goes against you. A trading robot must have one.

  • Biggest trade size

A trade bigger than this is not placed. Your robot never rounds a trade up to make it fit.

  • Most trades open at once

Once this many of its trades are open, your robot waits for one to close before it opens another.

  • Trading hours

Your robot opens trades only between the times you set, in the time zone you choose.

  • Pause around news

Your robot stays out for the minutes you set before and after big news, when prices can jump.

  • Closed for the weekend

If you choose, your robot closes its trades on Friday at the time you set and waits until the market opens again.

  • Account floor

If the account falls to the level you set, your robot stops opening trades, or closes its trades and stops, as you chose.

Your own stop button

Every robot that trades has a Stop robot button in the corner of its chart. Press it, then choose:

  • Stop new trades: it opens no new trades. Trades already open keep their stops and keep being managed.
  • Stop and close its trades: it closes the trades it opened, then stops.

It stays stopped, even after MetaTrader restarts, until you press Resume robot on its chart.

To stop every robot at once, switch off Algo Trading on MetaTrader's toolbar, or press Ctrl+E. Open trades stay open.

On your robot's chart

The buttons, in order

  1. Press Stop robot

  2. Choose Stop new trades or Stop and close its trades. Cancel changes nothing.

  3. To start again, press Resume robot

The buttons do not show in the Strategy Tester.

The Account Protector

One of the example robots opens no trades at all. It watches the whole account, including trades you open yourself and trades from other robots, and closes them when the account reaches a limit you set: for example a loss of 4% in one day or 8% in total, or before the weekend.

It cannot stop another robot, or you, from opening a new trade: it can only close trades after they open, and price gaps, slippage or a lost connection can take a loss past the limit.

Its numbers are examples, not any prop firm's rules. Check your firm's published limits and set your own.

Example settings

Account Protector

  • Closes every trade on the account, and deletes its pending orders, at a 4% loss in one day
  • Closes every trade at a total loss of 8%, counted from when you started it
  • Closes every trade on Friday at 21:00, your broker's server time
  • Can send a push alert to your phone when it acts

Risky robots are refused

Some robots try to win back a loss by taking bigger and bigger trades. That can empty an account fast. The builder checks every robot and refuses these before anything is built.

See every robot we will not build, and why

The builder refuses a robot that

Refused

  • makes the trade bigger after a loss
  • keeps adding trades while the price moves against you
  • trades without a stop loss

What the account lock does, and does not stop

When you buy a robot, you name the MetaTrader 5 accounts it may run on. Here is what that lock does, and what it cannot stop.

What it does

  • Your robot runs only on the account numbers you named.
  • The Strategy Tester always runs it, on any account.
  • On any other account it does nothing: no trades, no chart buttons, no messages to your phone. It shows a message on the chart, writes it in MetaTrader's Experts journal and shows one alert.
  • It stops casual sharing, and running a robot on the wrong account by mistake.
  • The robot never contacts our website, so it keeps working if our website is down.

What it does not do

  • It does not stop a determined person from breaking the lock, or a trade copier from copying its trades to other accounts.
  • On an account it refuses, it no longer manages trades it opened there before. Those trades keep the stop loss and take profit already set at the broker.
  • It treats demo and live accounts alike, because prop firm challenge accounts often show as demo.
  • It checks the account number only, not the broker. The same number at another broker would pass, which is rare.

Each robot file is made for one purchase and names its build when it starts. Our terms do not allow sharing the file or copying its trades to other accounts.
